A Passionate Mission

Radar-detector-geeks.com is the online division of Graham Smith Motoring, which was established in 1979 by two incorrigible car nuts, Paul Graham and Gary Smith. That same year, just out of school, they somehow wrangled an invitation from car nut legend Brock Yates to drive in the mythical Cannonball Run, the notorious outlaw coast-to-coast race. While engaging in various test runs to prepare for the race, Paul and Gary quickly became disgusted with much of the poor performing equipment they tried out. Eventually cutting through all the crap, they finally settled on an array of gear that worked extremely well: the best radar detector, the best driving lights, the best tires, the best suspension upgrades, the best seats and more. Their success in speeding ticket avoidance was particularly impressive. In spite of running triple-digit speeds for thousands of miles, they were one of only seven teams to not get even one single speeding ticket. After returning to their hometown of Louisville, Kentucky after the event, they quickly realized what they wanted to do for a living: provide quality gear to other car nuts who would understand and appreciate the better performing products. With absolutely no money, they somehow convinced a local landlord to rent them a small, second-floor office above a small shopping center. They began to run tiny, one-inch ads in some of the key car magazines like Autoweek, Car and Driver and Road & Track. Over 25 years later, the mission is the same: to supply better performing gear to the savvy car nut who understands the difference.

Don’t Worry, We’re Nuts
